Hey there Dance Friends,

The summer weather is finally here. It’s hot and I love it!

I have received a few messages asking if FDComm was hosting either Moonlight Dancing or FDFest, and I said no. A little part of me is a little sad, but, in truth, I am excited about this upcoming summer. I am looking forward to spending more time with my family.

After two decades of hosting vibrant outdoor dance events from 2004 to 2024, this summer brings an exciting new chapter for meβ€”this time, as a guest!

"The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance."

- Alan Watts

It feels refreshing to come and go as I please, experiencing the outdoor dance scene from a completely different perspective. The Latin dance community has flourished beautifully across the region, and I find myself dancing as an "unknown," discovering the simple joys and freedoms that anonymity brings.

I'm genuinely excited to share these outdoor danceventures with you, our Flying Dance Community. With so many FREE salsa, bachata, and kizomba events happening within 120km of Guelph, we have endless opportunities to meet up under the summer skies, embracing the rhythm, connection, and joy of being part of something bigger, together.

Here's to new beginnings and delightful discoveries on the dance floor!

Warm regards,

Nico & the Flying Dance Community Team

DANCE-VENTURES With The FDComm
FAQs: Preparing for Outdoor Dancing

Q: What should I bring to an outdoor dance event?
A: Essentials include a water bottle (stay hydrated, especially on hot summer evenings) and perhaps a small towel or fan – you will get warm from dancing! It’s wise to bring some sunscreen or bug spray if the event is during daylight or at dusk. Many dancers also carry an extra shirt or a small bag for personal items. The atmosphere is casual, so just bring your energy and a smile.

Q: Is there a dress code?
A: Dress comfortably and for the weather. There’s no formal dress code at outdoor socials – t-shirts, tanks, sundresses, shorts, or active wear are all common. Comfortable shoes are important: opt for sneakers or dance shoes (smooth soles) if possible, so you can spin and move easily. Avoid flip-flops or loose sandals that might fly off. Layers can help if the evening gets cooler, but expect to warm up quickly once you start dancing!

Q: Do I need to bring a partner?
A: No partner needed! Outdoor Latin dance events are very social and inclusive – people typically rotate partners during the lessons and socials. You can absolutely go solo; you’ll meet new people and there are always others looking to dance. Of course, you’re welcome to bring friends or a partner if you prefer, but it’s not required. The community is friendly, and organizers make sure everyone gets to dance.

"If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."

- African Proverb

Q: Should I go with friends or alone?
A: Either works. Going with friends can be fun and help if you’re a bit shy – you’ll have familiar faces to dance with or hang out together between songs. But don’t worry if you go alone; Latin dance crowds are welcoming. Many people attend solo and end up making new friends. In fact, mixing and dancing with different partners is part of the experience. Feel free to invite classmates or friends, but you won’t be out of place if you come by yourself.

Q: What if I’m a total beginner?
A: Perfect! These events are beginner-friendly. Almost all of them start with a short beginner lesson taught by instructors (often covering the basic steps of salsa or bachata). Just jump in – you’ll learn a few moves and get comfortable. During the social dancing, experienced dancers are generally happy to dance with newcomers. The key is to relax, have fun, and move to the music. No one expects perfection, just bring your enthusiasm.

Q: Any other tips for outdoor dancing?
A: Check the event’s weather policy – if it’s raining heavily some events might cancel or move to a backup location. It’s a good idea to follow the event or organizer on social media for last-minute updates. When dancing outdoors, the ground might be concrete or pavement, so again, wear shoes with a bit of cushioning. Stay hydrated (we can’t stress that enough on warm nights). And lastly, be respectful and kind to fellow dancers: outdoor socials are all about community, having fun, and sharing the joy of dance! Enjoy your summer dancing adventures.
