Hi everyone,

I have been looking forward to writing this one for a while.

You may have noticed that I have not sent a newsletter in a few months. I want to be honest about that. Flying Dance Community has been going through (and still is…) a significant period of transformation | building local dance hubs across multiple cities, expanding our dance program, restructuring and training our growing instructor team, and trying to figure out how to do all of that without losing what matters most: the sense of community and connection that brought us all together in the first place.

In the middle of all that growth, some things slipped. Communication was one of them.

That is on me, and I am grateful for your patience.

But here is what I have been working toward, and why I am genuinely excited to share it with you today.

The Flying Connection Method

THE BIGGEST CHANGE SINCE 2012

Over the last while, I’ve been doing a lot of rethinking behind the scenes — not only about our classes, but about the bigger picture of what Flying Dance Community is here to do.

The last time I made a major change to our dance program was back in 2012, when we moved into our current Guelph location.

That was a long time ago.

Back then (before Covid), Flying Dance Community was much more centered around me. I was teaching multiple dance styles, hosting socials, organizing events, and holding together many of the moving parts behind the scenes.

But over time the past few years, something beautiful has happened.

Flying Dance Community has grown beyond just me.

We now have a growing team of instructors who are helping us expand into different cities and connect with people from all walks of life. They are incredible ambassadors of the spirit of Flying Dance Community, and through their teaching, they are also helping shape students into ambassadors of dance, connection, and community themselves.

As we’ve expanded into offerings of Salsa, Bachata, West Coast Swing, and Modern Line Dancing, plus Private & Wedding dance lessons, and social dance events in multiple local communities, I’ve been asking myself a deeper question:

How do we keep building something that is not just a dance program, but a real community hub?

Because that has always been the deeper goal.

At Flying Dance Community, we are not just teaching steps. We are creating places where people can come together, connect, and feel part of something. Dance is one of the primary human activities we use to bring people together | to move together, laugh together, learn together, and in some small but meaningful way, help create a less lonely world.

That is what this next chapter is about.

After a lot of reflection, restructuring, and honestly, some growing pains, I’m excited to share that we now have a new structured dance program for Flying Dance Community.

This is the first major program shift we’ve made since 2012, and it doubles down on what we do best: building community through dance.

We are calling this new way of teaching, connecting, and community-building The Flying Connection Method.

Over the next few months, I’ll be sharing more about what The Flying Connection Method is all about and how it will continue shaping the way we grow together as a community.

The Evolution of Flying Dance Community (FDComm)

What’s changing

We are now integrating our Next Step Socials and our Open Houses directly into our 8-week and 16-week dance blocks.

This means our program is no longer just about attending weekly classes and going home.

It is now more intentionally built around four things:

Learn. Practice. Connect. Share.

That means students will have more opportunities not only to learn in class, but also to use what they are learning in a real social environment, invite other people into the experience, and feel more connected to the wider Flying Dance Community.

What this looks like moving forward

Within our structured dance program:

  1. Our NEW Next Step Socials events will now be integrated into each dance block

  2. Our NEW Dance Open House events (Discover Dance Passport)will also be built into the rhythm of the program

  3. Students will have clearer ways to move from class into practice and social dancing

  4. Our students have the opportunity to try out the different dance styles we offer without interrupting their current dance schedule

  5. Friends, family, and newcomers will have easier entry points into the community

  6. Weather permitting, dancing roadtrips with new and old friends to the different communities allowing crossover and connections across the Flying Dance Spaces

I’ve already started putting this into practice with our Latin groups, and now it is being incorporated into our West Coast Swing and Line Dancing programs as well.

This is not a small adjustment.

It is a deeper restructuring of how we support students, how we build momentum, and how we create a stronger sense of belonging across all of our communities.

Why this matters

For a long time, many dance programs, including ours, have naturally centered on the weekly class.

But, in my experience, the class alone is not the full dance experience.
• People need places to practice.
• People need places to connect, hang out outside of work & home.
• People need places to invite others.
• People need places where learning something new is supported.
• People need places where your receive a warm genueine smile back when you look up and smile.

That is what this structure is designed to support.

For current students, this means more chances to keep dancing outside the lesson itself.

For newer students, it creates a gentler and more welcoming next step.

For past students, it creates easier opportunities to return and reconnect.

And for Flying Dance Community as a whole, it helps bring our Salsa, Bachata, Modern Line Dancing, West Coast Swing, and Private dance lesson communities together with a stronger shared rhythm.

Our New Dance Program

Looking ahead

We’ll continue letting you know when the next Next Step Socials and Open Houses are coming up in the schedule, so you can plan ahead, invite others, and make the most of the new structure.

This is just the beginning of a new phase for Flying Dance Community, and I’m genuinely excited to see where it leads — not only for our dance program, but for the future of the communities we are building together wherever we go.

I also want to say thank you.

Thank you for your patience while I’ve taken time to rethink and restructure things.
Thank you for staying connected.
Thank you for continuing to dance with us.
And thank you for being part of a community that means so much to me.

I believe deeply in what dance can do for people.

Not just as a skill.
Not just as an activity.
But as a way to bring human beings together.

And I believe The Flying Connection Method will help us do that even better.

I look forward to sharing more with you over the coming months — and I look forward to seeing many new and old friends on the social dance floor soon.

With appreciation,

Nico
