A New Dance Season, A Few Changes And What’s Next

Hi everyone, dance friends!

I hope you’ve been having a wonderful summer, and hopefully getting outside for a little dancing along the way!

My family and I recently returned from a short break on the East Coast visiting family, where I also discovered a new word: boondocks. 😂  It was nice to get away, slow down a little and enjoy some family time. But after only three or four weeks away, it somehow feels like a lifetime since I’ve seen many of you, or been out dancing myself.

As we head into a new dance season, I wanted to share a few updates about what’s changing, what’s staying, and where Flying Dance Community is heading next.

We Started Differently This Year

Unlike previous years, we started this season with Dance Open Houses in every community where we teach.

They gave our instructors and me a chance to reconnect with returning students, meet lots of new faces, reintroduce Flying Dance Community, answer questions, and simply get everyone moving again after the summer break.

A big thank you to our instructors and to everyone who came out, brought a friend, danced with us, asked questions and helped welcome new people into the community.

A Few Changes for Our Next Chapter

Moving away from having one permanent studio has given us much more flexibility.

We can now bring Flying Dance Community into more communities, use different spaces and create different types of dance experiences. But this new model also means adjusting a few of the ways we operate.

Beginning this season:

* All class passes will be valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

* Our Annual Dance Pass will be discontinued after September 1, 2026.

* Annual passes purchased this summer will remain valid through August 31, 2027.

These changes are part of building a model that gives us more flexibility while allowing Flying Dance Community to continue growing across several communities over the coming years.

A Quick Note About Registration

I also want to acknowledge something that has been a little frustrating for some of you, and for me too.

We’ve been having ongoing challenges with our registration system for quite a while now, and I’m sorry for any confusion or inconvenience that has caused.

As we’ve transitioned away from having one permanent studio and into managing classes across several communities, I’ve been trying to find the right software to support the way we now operate.

I’ve tested a few different systems, and unfortunately, not all of them have worked as well as I had hoped. Along the way, I’ve also started learning how to build and customize some of these systems myself. So apparently, in addition to being a dance instructor, I’m slowly becoming a developer too. 😂

It has definitely been a learning process, but I’m hoping to have a much smoother registration system in place within the next dance block.

In the meantime, email is the best way to confirm which classes you are registered for. If you’re unsure about your city, level, day, or start date, just send us a message and we’ll respond as soon as we can with your registration details.

Thank you for your patience while I get this part of our transition sorted out.

Our Schedule And Dance Packages Are Evolving Too | West Coast Swing

West Coast Swing (WCS) will no longer be offered as part of our regular weekly group-class schedule. There are numerous reasons for this sudden change, but primarily, while practicing, my knee was upset with me for all the dancing I am putting it through, so it’s requiring I make different decisions.

I LOOOOVE WCS. It’s probably my favourite partner dance next to Salsa. Sorry, Bachata lovers. 😂

BUT, West Coast Swing isn’t disappearing.

Instead, it will become part of a new, more customized dance experience with Flying Dance that we are planning to introduce this fall. Thus reducing my WCS dancing to once a week, totally managable.

More details on that soon!

Guelph Classes Are Moving to Sundays

Our regular Guelph Salsa and Bachata group classes will no longer take place on Tuesday evenings.

They will now be offered on Sunday afternoons. (12 PM to 3 PM)

There is a bigger reason for this than simply changing days. We want to create a clearer path for students who would like to continue developing their dancing:

Level 1 → Level 2 → Next Level Dance Workshops

We also moved the start date back to Sunday, September 13, here is the updated schedule:

• 12:00 PM — Bachata Level 1

• 12:45 PM — Salsa Level 1

• 1:30 PM — Salsa Level 2

• 2:15 PM — Bachata Level 2

Level 1 → Level 2 → Next Level Dance Workshops

Our Next Level Dance Workshops are also offered on Sundays (3 PM to 6 PM), and are designed for dancers who are ready to move beyond simply collecting more patterns

We start working more on the things that make social dancing feel good: confidence, connection, timing, musicality, adaptability and stronger social-dancing skills.

Moving the regular classes to Sundays makes that progression much easier.

One Next Step Social [Dance.Open.House] Per Community

Anyone who has been around the Southern Ontario Latin dance scene knows there is definitely no shortage of socials to attend. Like…a lot. 😂

We’ve also learned that in some of the smaller communities we serve, hosting two Flying Dance socials during every two-month block can be a lot to ask.

It can also create unnecessary overlap. For example, Erin and Georgetown socials falling on the same Monday, or Arthur and Guelph on the same Tuesday.

So starting in September 2026, each community will have one Next Step Social per dance block, held on the final month of that block (8-week block). Less is more.

Rather than trying to create more and more events, I would rather make the ones we do have more meaningful.

It also opens the door for something I’d really like to see develop:

FDComm DanceAdventures.

• Maybe a few Arthur students head to Guelph.

• Georgetown dancers visit Erin.

• Stratford students make a trip to another Flying Dance community.

Instead of every community always dancing separately, we start giving people more reasons to visit each other.

Many dance floors. One community.

Quick Note (and a Win): Arthur Classes Now Start at 6:00 PM

One of the great things about our recent NSS–Dance Open House in Arthur was hearing directly from the people who will be dancing with us.

A few students suggested that an earlier 6:00 PM start would work better, especially for those travelling in from the surrounding countryside. We also heard from students who would love the option to learn both Bachata and Salsa in the same evening.

So, we’ve adjusted the schedule.

Because of instructor availability, Joanne—whom many of you have already met—will now be teaching both the Level 1 Bachata and Salsa classes. You’ll be in very capable hands.

Beginning Tuesday, September 1, the updated Arthur schedule will be:

• 6:00 PM — Bachata Level 1

• 6:45 PM — Salsa Level 1

• 7:30 PM — Salsa Level 2

We’re happy we were able to make the change based on your feedback.

Fall Classes Begin Soon

Our new Salsa and Bachata blocks begin around the week of August 31:

• Georgetown — Monday, August 31

• Erin — New start date coming shortly

• Arthur — Tuesday, September 1

• Brantford — Wednesday, September 2

• Stratford — Thursday, September 3

• Milton — Thursday, September 3

• Guelph — Sunday, September 13

And one important reminder for our Guelph students:

There are no longer regular group classes on Tuesday evenings. Guelph Salsa and Bachata classes will now be taught on Sundays.

One Last Tuesday Social in Guelph

Before we officially settle into the new schedule, we’ll have one final Tuesday Next Step Social in Guelph on September 1.

Think of it as another chance to reconnect after summer, welcome some of our newest dancers and officially get ourselves back into the dancing rhythm.

There are quite a few things evolving at Flying Dance Community right now.

But the reason behind the changes is actually pretty simple.

We want to create better ways for adults to move, meet people, grow as dancers and genuinely feel part of a community - whether that happens in Guelph, Georgetown, Arthur, Stratford, Milton, Brantford, Erin, or eventually somewhere we haven’t even reached yet.

Thank you for continuing to dance with us, supporting our instructors, bringing friends into the community, and giving us the room to keep evolving what Flying Dance Community can become.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you on the dance floor this fall.
